In celebration of Read Across America Week, members of Robbinsville High School’s National English Honor Society visited Sharon Elementary School on Monday, March 3.
The visit was a special opportunity for high school students to promote literacy and engage with younger students in a meaningful way.
Throughout the morning, NEHS members visited classrooms to read aloud to elementary students and lead interactive activities designed to foster a love of reading. The initiative aligns with the honor society’s mission to promote literacy across all grade levels and strengthen connections within the community.
Sharon Elementary students were thrilled to have high school visitors join their classrooms, to hear stories, and complete a fun activity. The excitement was mutual, as the high school students enjoyed the opportunity to return to their former elementary school, reconnect with their former teachers, and inspire the next generation of readers.
Senior NEHS member and club Social Director Rithika Bodecherla said: “I had a great time working with the elementary schoolers. All of them seemed to have a wonderful time. I loved seeing how the younger generations are just as excited about books as we were growing up, it was uplifting to see.”
Senior NEHS member Summer Heyburn also shared: “As someone who adores books, it warmed my heart to see the Sharon students get excited about reading. They were on the edges of their seats during the stories: laughing, gasping in surprise, saying what they thought would happen next. Their enjoyment made me realize that the next generation will be full of readers if we keep encouraging them.”
Read Across America Week, emphasizes the importance of reading and literacy development for children of all ages. The collaboration between Robbinsville High School and Sharon Elementary School is something that the district is always looking to do more.
As Read Across America Week continues, both schools remain committed to fostering literacy and lifelong learning, ensuring that students of all ages have opportunities to explore the joys of reading.
