Robbinsville High School’s auditorium will take audiences back to 1960s Oklahoma this month as students perform The Outsiders, the school’s fall drama production.
Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel, the play explores class division and empathy through the struggles of the working-class “Greasers” and the wealthy “Socs.” The story has resonated with generations of readers — including Robbinsville students, who read the book in seventh grade.
“Since we announced the fall play, I’ve had students tell me that The Outsiders is one of their favorite stories and were so excited when it was chosen,” said director and Assistant Principal Secretary Melissa Avellino. “The passion the students have for the material comes through in their live performances, and the results are truly special.”
This year’s production is the largest fall drama in school history, with 22 cast members and more than 60 students contributing overall.
“I am pleased there has been such an eagerness to take part in what I am sure will be an excellent performance,” said Superintendent Dr. Patrick Pizzo. “The arts are an essential aspect of education, and I encourage the entire community to come out and support our students’ efforts.”
Avellino, serving as director for the first time, said she has been inspired by the cast and crew’s dedication.
“The talent we have involved in this production is incredible, and the students’ work ethic has been nothing short of admirable,” she said. “This won’t be one you want to miss.”
Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 and Friday, Nov. 14, and at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Robbinsville High School auditorium, 155 Robbinsville Edinburg Road.
Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors.
