The Princeton-Blairstown Center (PBC) cordially invites the Greater Princeton community to attend a Soirée Under the Stars at Unionville Vineyard in Ringoes on October 9, 2015 from 6 to 9 p.m. After several years of transition into an affiliate of Princeton University, and many more years since its last fundraiser, the Center continues to strike out on its own.
PBC, originally a summer camp founded and run by Princeton University students to give inner-city boys a character-building fresh air experience, evolved into a variety of year-round, multi-service, youth development experiential education programs serving over 5,200 students from the Mid-Atlantic States. In addition to its 2014-15 school-based programs at Rivera Middle School and Trenton Central High West in Trenton, PBC runs programs at Great Oaks Charter School in Newark and Global Neighborhood Secondary School in New York City.
The PBC School-Based Programs are led by a Masters-level Site Coordinator housed in the school. Small groups of students meet weekly during the school year for positive peer support to make healthy choices, problem solve, delay gratification and set goals. The group also works on communications skills, focus and resiliency.
To complement the school-based experience, students travel to the 264-acre Blairstown Campus during the spring, summer and fall. There they work with adventure-based facilitators in small groups to focus on practical STEM applications using the woods, lake and streams of Blairstown to delve further into ecology, wildlife and sustainable energy topics. Facilitators also use adventure and ropes courses, a climbing wall/dam rappel and the outdoors to challenge students and help them improve social-emotional and leadership skills that can transfer back to school and family life.
