An armed man was shot and killed by police earlier today after a lengthy standoff with officers, according to prosecutors.
The armed man entered the Panera Bread on Nassau Street shortly before 10 a.m., according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. Customers and employees were able to flee the restaurant.
Nassau Street was shut down between Washington and Witherspoon streets, and police contained the situation within the restaurant.
Negotiators attempted to get the suspect to surrender peacefully, according to the attorney general’s statement. The standoff ended shortly before 3 p.m. when the suspect was fatally shot by police.
Prosecutors said the identity of the gunman is being withheld pending notification of his family. No further details about the shooting are available, pending the ongoing investigation.

During the incident, Princeton University evacuated two campus buildings closest to the sandwich shop, Henry House and Scheide Caldwell House.
Princeton High School sheltered in place as a precaution, principal Gary Snyder said. Students remained secured indoors, but classroom instruction continueed as normal.
