The board of commissioners of Plainsboro Fire District No. 1 will seek voter approval to replace firefighters’ self-contained breathing apparatus during a special capital vote on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Plainsboro Firehouse, 405 Plainsboro Road.

The fire district’s current air masks will reach their required expiration date in early 2018.

Voters will be asked to approve up to $350,000 to replace the air masks, which include the face mask and air bottles that protect firefighters from toxic gases in fires and other hazardous situations. All Plainsboro registered voters are encouraged to participate in the vote.

“State law requires the fire district to obtain voter approval of a capital purchase during the calendar year prior to the year when the purchase will be made,” Ted Wager, chairman of the board of commissioners, said. “We expect to purchase the SCBAs (air masks) in 2017 in order to replace them in advance of the expiration date in 2018.”
