I just finished reading the Suburban Mom column, “Where have all the manners gone?” (WWP News, Nov. 1). What an excellent and topical column, especially in light of all the political name-calling being done on television.
My mother always had us write thank you notes, even if we thanked someone in person.
It was just the polite thing to do. Holding doors for somebody while exiting or entering a building or elevator was just standard.
It is true that good manners begin at home and, sadly, many adults do not practice good manners so, therefore, their children have no clue what constitutes good manners.
This seems to be the “me” generation — or maybe I should say generations, whether it is on the road when a car squeezes another one out, or someone cuts in ahead of another in line, etc. There are so many examples of a “me” scenario that I am certain everyone can think of at least two or three times this has happened to them.
There used to be more consideration of/for other people. Call me old fashioned, but I miss those days. Thank you Euna Kwon Brossman for reminding us of how life should be.
