The articles about razing Grover farm buildings (see page 1) bring to mind another older building in the township on the grounds of what is now Mercer County Park.
The John Rogers House, built in 1761, is the second-oldest house in Mercer County, behind only the Watson House in Hamilton Township. The Rogers House is also the only property in West Windsor listed on both the State and National Register of Historic Places. Mention has been made of Washington’s Continental Army camping near the house on its march to Princeton. Stories have been printed over the years regarding plans by West Windsor and Mercer County to restore the house, but funding was always an issue.
Currently, Mercer County has no plans to restore the house and seems content to let it continue to deteriorate. Perhaps the county, West Windsor Township and the Historical Society could put together a plan to raise the funds to preserve this important piece of our history.
I should mention that the home’s original owner, John Rogers, willed the house to my fifth-great-grandfather Isaac and his son Ezekiel Rogers.
