Before your holiday calendar fills completely, be sure to include the annual Holiday Open House at the Schenck Farmstead historical site on Southfield Road in West Windsor on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3. That weekend, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day, the West Windsor Historical Society will welcome you to visit our treasured heritage of prehistory and history. You will tour the farmhouse with society members in historic attire and have traditional holiday treats.
Then come out to the barn and hear us talk about the fine points of hand tools, horse shoes and lumber. We’ll even get the old John Deere green tractor out for a run in the field!
Check out the Environmental Education Center at the south end of the barn, where you can learn about everything from the rocks under the township to the birds flying above you. Our prehistoric residents had an abundance of plants and animals to feed upon; the people of Colonial times learned much from them.
The early schoolhouse will inform you of our great educational traditions, which continue to the present day. You will be surprised when you find out what was expected of school children in the early days of the township. Meet the people who made this township such a wonderful place to live, including members of the Schenck family! (You will probably want to ask them to share those cookie recipes!) And don’t forget: if you have a good time, you could schedule your own future events at this very special place!
