St. Lawrence Bike Safety Rodeo set for May 11

The Bicycle Safety Rodeo and SAFE KIDS Day is set for May 11.

The annual event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, 2381 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville.

Activities at the event is designed to teach children ages three to 12 and their families about safety and prevention while participating in sports and other recreational activities.

The program features bicycle inspections by representatives the Economy Bike Shop and the Lawrenceville Police Department, who will check tires, handlebars, chain guards and reflectors. Following inspections, parents will receive a list of what needs repairing.

The police department is also set to organize a safety course. Volunteers guide children through the course and point out where to use hand signals and how to avoid unexpected obstacles.

Children who pre-register for the event will receive a free helmet fitted by St. Lawrence therapists.

In addition to bike safety, the Hamilton YMCA and Making Waves Swim School are set to conduct a water safety program featuring games. St. Lawrence plans to give away a limited numer of personal flotation devices for children up to 90 pounds.

The Lawrenceville Fire Department is set to provide an engine that the children can ride and display a small house designed to teach about fire hazards.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is set to present an exhibition on hazardous materials.

The Trenton Thunder baseball team is scheduled to be on site with their mascot Boomer.

Other participants include Capital Health System, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton, St. Francis Medical Center, Princeton HealthCare System, Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership, Greater Mercer TMA, Lawrence Hopewell Trail, Lakeview Child Center, RAI, McCaffrey’s Supermarkets, the County Sheriff’s Department, PNC Bank, Quakerbridge Radiology Associates, and Hopewell and Lawrence Township health departments.
