Lawrence artist Bill Plank donated his life-size replica of DaVinci’s flying machine, the ornithopter to the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System.
Plank, a retired art teacher, loaned his model to the library to promote this year’s summer reading program for children, Fizz, Boom, Read.
Plank built the ornithopter, another term for an aircraft with flapping wings, with his father more than 20 years ago. He built the model as an aid to teach his art students the connection between art, science and technology.
The flying machine demonstrates the art-science connection which is this year’s summer reading program theme.
Plank also painted the mural hanging on the wall behind the machine which highlights the scientific endeavors of Leonardo DaVinci, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.
The flying machine is set to be on display during July and early August at the library, 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville.
