All seven Lawrence Township Public Schools recently earned bronze certification by Sustainable Jersey for Schools and received the organization’s 2017 Sustainability Makes Sense Award. LTPS received the award in recognition of its commitment to implementing Sustainable Jersey for Schools actions in a way that creates substantial budgetary savings for the district, namely for the district’s solar panel initiative.
LTPS schools and the district were honored at the 2017 Sustainable Jersey for Schools Awards Ceremony during the New Jersey School Boards Association Workshop in Atlantic City on Oct. 24.
The roofs of the district’s seven schools are maxed out with solar panels. The initiative began with a 2008 referendum approved by Lawrence voters. The solar panels have generated over $3 million of revenue to date. That, combined with the amount of energy usage offset by the panels, brings total savings to over $4 million. Savings go to Lawrence residents in the form of tax relief.
