Sophomores Aluen Tomat Kelly and Tashay Moore were the recipients of the Lawrence Township council “Commendation” by former mayor David Maffei based on their Girl Scout silver award project, in which they taught the public about the benefits of bats. The silver award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, and it requires a minimum of 50 hours in a community service project. Their project was called “Make the World a Battier Place!”
Kelly and Moore gave different lectures and presentations about bats, made a video on how to construct bat houses, put together a web page and put two bat houses on trees and one on a post by the Brearley house trail. They also each made an art book to teach the public about bats and bats of New Jersey, which were donated and can be seen at at the Lawrence Nature Center and on their web page.
They also earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their community service. Kelly earned the gold presidential award for investing over a 100 hours and Moore the bronze presidential award for investing over 50 hours.
