Jim Hegedus Memorial 5K to end after 13 years

The 13th and final Jim Hegedus Memorial 5K Run is set for June 16.

The race has been run since 2006 in memory of Jim Hegedus, 2002 graduate of Steinert High School. Hegedus ran cross county and track for four years at Steinert, serving as a captain as a senior. He also ran for the University of Maine. Hegedus died in May 2006 due to injuries sustained in a car crash.

The run is scheduled to being at 10 a.m., with check-in at 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., at Veterans Park’s gazebo near the volleyball courts, 2206 Kuser Road, Hamilton.

The course is entirely paved. Water stops are at the halfway point.

Medals are set to be awarded to top three male and female runners in each age group.

Pre-entries must be received by June 10 and guarantee a Jim Hegedus Memorial Run T-shirt. Race day entrants will receive a T-shirt while supplies last. Early entry fee is $18. The race day fee is $20.

Proceeds to toward annual scholarships given to Steinert athletes in Hegedus’ name, as well as the Sunshine Foundation. The Hegedus family plans to continue both the scholarships and the donations to Sunshine Foundation, despite no longer holding the run.
