Ewing High School athletic trainer David Csillan received the Korey Stringer Institute Lifesaving Service Award at a ceremony April 23 in New York City.
The Lifesaving Service Award recognizes exceptional service aimed to improve and advocate policies in order to reduce sudden death in sport.
Csillan was hired as EHS’s athletic trainer in 1991. Since then, he has become a national speaker and served on many committees like the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.
He served as the president of the Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey from 1999 to 2001. During his term, he was instrumental in the passing of the state Athletic Training Licensure Act in addition to tenure for athletic trainers in secondary schools.
In 2009, Csillan was a member of the NATA Pre-Season Heat Acclimatization Guidelines for Secondary School Athletics Task Force. With his help, New Jersey became the first state to adopt these guidelines.
Csillan was inducted into the ATSNJ Hall of Fame in 2008. Other awards include; NJSIAA/NJSCA Hall of Fame in 2004, Ewing High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and the ATSNJ Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2003.
The Korey Stringer Institute is housed in the University of Connecticut’s department of Kinesiology, which is know for its research and expertise in athlete health and safety. Founded by Kelci Stringer, the institute is named after Korey Stringer- an offensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings who died of exertional heat stroke in August 2001.
The mission of the KSI is to provide first-rate information, resources, assistance and advocacy for the promotion of preventing sudden death in sport via health and safety initiatives
