The YWCA Princeton will host its 21st annual Firecracker 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at Veterans Park in Hamilton.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Pearl Bates Scholarship Fund at The Burke Foundation Early Childhood Center, which provides financial assistance to families seeking year-round, high-quality childcare. The fund honors Pearl Bates, a dedicated YWCA Princeton volunteer who passed away in 1963.
“Events like the Firecracker 5K do more than raise funds — they ignite awareness about the urgent need for accessible early childhood education,” said Rose Wong, chief executive officer of YWCA Princeton.
“Through the Pearl Bates Scholarship Fund, we are breaking down financial barriers so that every child, regardless of their family’s income, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive,” Wong said.
Nearly half of the children enrolled at the center receive financial support, including funding from the scholarship. The assistance helps working families access full-day, year-round programs that prepare children for kindergarten while supporting parents in building stability through employment or education.
The Firecracker 5K is a family-friendly event featuring a USATF-certified 5K course, children’s 50-yard and 100-yard dashes for ages 3 to 8, lawn games, a live DJ, and prizes for top finishers in 16 age categories.
Participants who register by May 31 are guaranteed a T-shirt. The Travelin’ Toms Coffee Truck will also be onsite.
