The News reported in the March 18 issue that in the middle school division, Community and Grover middle school received first and second place in the state, respectively, in the Science Olympiad. In the high school division, High School South received first place and High School North received second place.
The close high school competition spanned 25 different events in engineering, experimental science, earth science, chemistry, physics, and biology. The national competition will be held in May.
For the tenth year in a row, Community Middle School’s Science Olympiad team took first place in the state championship. The team will participate in the national championship competition in May. CMS coaches include Kyle Schimpf, Art Downs, Eileen Chubik-Kwis, and Pam Twigg, with assistance from Morty Levine, Denise Weber, Bob Krzyzkowski, and Virginia Baner. The team results were published in the May 18 issue.
Each High School North team member received at least one medal. The results include:
First place in Anatomy and Physiology: Aastha Chokshi and Payal Marathe; Dynamic Planet: Renuka Reddy and Alex Ameri; Fossils: Renuka Reddy and Alex Ameri; and Sumo Bots: Felix Su and Sanjana Manikandan.
Second place in Disease Detective: Barbara Zhan and Bolong Xu; Forensics: Payal Marathe and Eugene Tang; and Sounds of Music: Barbara Zhan and Claire Su.
Third place in Brilliant Brains: Felix Xiao and Renuka Reddy; Chemistry Lab: Ben Liu and Felix Xiao; Epidemiology: Aastha Chokshi, Alex Ameri, Jayati Verma, and Saahith Pochiraju; Helicopters: Felix Su and Henry Wang; Mission Possible: Claire Su, Sanjana Manikandan, and Jenn Ibanez. Fourth place in Microbe Mission: Barbara Zhan and Payal Marathe; Remote Sensing: Peter Chi and Sanjana Manikandan; Technical Problem Solving: Henry Wang and Rithwick Vedati.
Other awards were received for Ecology: Bonong Xu and Daniel Liu; Optics: Peter Chi and Rithwik Vedati; and Ornithology: Daniel Liu and Eugene Tang.
