The West Windsor 12-year-old all-star softball team, led by manager Hector Mendez and coach Shailesh “Sonny” Modi, stormed through Pool B of the annual District 12 tournament,going 4-0. The township has won three straight District 12 titles, and hoped to capture a fourth as it faced Cranbury-Plainsboro on Thursday, July 6, after the News went to press.
Last year’s U12 softball team won the state championship, and placed third in the Northeast Region. This year’s team looks to contend for the titles again. West Windsor stormed through Pool B in the first round of the tournament, defeating Florence, 18-3, taking Lawrence out twice, 10-0 and 3-1, and besting Washington Township 7-2. In all, WW outscored its opponents, 38-6. Their most formidable competition will be Bordentown, which outscored opponents 54-6.
The WW roster includes Jeanine Asay, Katelyn Black, Hye-Jin Kim, Brianna King, Elizabeth Mendez, Jenna Modi, Christine Niciforo, Kaitlin Perrine, Taylor Phelan, Anna Schnitter, and Emily Weinberg.
The WW team opened the next round of the tournament against Cranbury-Plainsboro, which went 2-2 in the first round, and made it to the second round by virtue of a run differential tiebreaker.
Russell Nelson manages the C-P team, and is assisted by coaches Larry Zink and Rees Powell.
The C-P roster includes Kimberly Priscilla Arnold, Juliet Florence Brooks, Gina Marie Chialoranzio, Madison Lee Copeland, Tiffany Anne Gagli ardo, Abigail Gross, Kristina Nicole Leung, Regina Florinda Lopez, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Nelson, Nicole Allison Powell, Sara B. Rosenthal, Adrienne Elizabeth Solomon, Amelia Rose Spina, and Hannah Chamberlaine Zink.
The second round of the tournament is a double-elimination format.
