Noting a petition signed by hundreds of residents, Board vice president Robert Johnson said the administration and facilities committee also discussed facility naming rights at its March 12 meeting. West Windsor resident Pete Weale has spearheaded an effort to get High School North’s baseball field named after 2009 graduate and star pitcher David Bachner, who died suddenly just as he was to start college.
Johnson said that at the next committee meeting he hopes to have a draft of a facilities’ naming rights policy ready for the internal discussions. “We have done some work but we have, frankly, not made as much progress as we hoped for,” he said.
In an E-mail Board president Hemant Marathe noted that “David Bachner has been recognized by the school district in various ways. There was a plaque unveiled in his honor that will be placed on a permanent large stone near the baseball field this year. A framed picture of him hangs in the main hallway and a scholarship is being awarded by the baseball booster club in his name.”
Editor’s note: Several of the people posting comments to this story have misinterpreted Mr. Marathe’s quote in the last paragraph of the story. Marathe was responding to a reporter’s question about what had already been done to honor David Bachner’s memory. Marathe did not imply that too much had been done and he did not rule out that more things would be done.
