Westminster to hold three concerts

Westminster College is set to present one concert on April 12 and two concerts on April 13.

Women of the Westminster Symphonic, conducted by Ryan James Brandau, is set to present a concert titled A Litany: Songs to the Virgin on April 12 at 8 p.m in Bristol Chapel.

The performance will feature Poulenc’s Litanies à la Vierge Noire for female chorus and organ, and works from across the ages including pieces by Charpentier, Rheinberger, Britten and Duruflé. It will be accompanied by Eric Plutz on organ and Ashley Grant on harp.

The Westminster Symphonic Choir is composed of all juniors and seniors at Westminster Choir College, as well as half of the graduate students.

Tickets are $20.

The Westminster Chinese Instrument Orchestra and the Music from China Youth Orchestra conducted by Wang Guowei is set perform on April 13 at 3 p.m. in Bristol Chapel.

The program will feature traditional and new music for Chinese instruments from different parts of China.

Founded in 2011, the Westminster Chinese Instrument Orchestra provides an opportunity for students to learn an instrument and gain some insight into Chinese culture and history.

Admission is free.

Westminster Jubilee Singers, joined by alumna Deborah Ford and conducted by Brandon Waddles, is set to present a concert titled Embrace on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel.

The program will feature compositions by William L. Dawson, Roberta Martin, Ralph Carmichael, Adolphus Hailstork, Jester Hairston, Charles Nick, Margaret P. Douroux, Darius Brooks and Brandon Waddles.

The ensemble is part of the college’s sacred music department and performs literature that includes African-American spirituals and folk songs, classical music by African-American composers, African chants and dances, gospel music and secular songs.

Waddles holds de­grees from Morehouse College and West­minster Choir College.

Deborah Ford has received recognition as a winner of the New Jersey State Opera Competition and as the first-prize winner of the American Institute of Musical Studies Competition in Graz, Austria. Most recently she won the gold medal in the Savannah On Stage Vocal Competition, Savannah, Georgia.

Her repertoire encompasses works by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Verdi, Strauss and Ravel, as well as from the African American and American experience.
