As a nonprofit organization largely built on the service of volunteers, the West Windsor Arts Council is celebrating National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 15 to 21. The council will honor two dedicated volunteers who went “above and beyond” in serving the arts community, according to a statement from the arts council.
This year, Marci Gelb and Surabhi Kiran have been selected to receive the arts council’s Volunteers of the Year Award for their exemplary service in support of the arts.
“We are so grateful to them for lending us their talent and efforts to make our community more vibrant through the arts,” executive director Aylin Green said.
Gelb has gone above and beyond in her service this year by acting as the chairperson for both the Member Show:Abstraction, and for the upcoming show Cross Cultural Currents: The Art of Zhiyuan Cong, Chung-Fan Chang, LiQin Tan, Jing Zhou.
“I love helping to provide a venue for local artists to come together and express themselves,” Gelb said.
Gelb has been active with arts council for many years. She has served on the exhibition committee since the Fall of 2011, chairing numerous shows as well as the Off the Wall Art Exhibit and the Artisan Market for three years. Gelb, an attorney, lives in Princeton Junction with her husband and two sons.
Over the past three years, Surabhi Kiran, now a senior at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, has volunteered over 50 hours.
“I absolutely love everything about it,” Kiran said. “The best part about being a part of [the West Windsor Arts Council] is that you get to meet new people and make new friends.”
