By a vote of 5-2, the site plan for the proposed upgrade to the Valero station located on Route 571 (across from McCaffrey’s Supermarket) was approved at last week’s Zoning Board meeting. “The next step for them will be to submit a revised set of plans addressing the concerns raised at the meeting,” explained Sam Surtees, zoning officer and land use manager. “There aren’t many outstanding issues-the process is going smoothly for them,” he added.
The plan calls for demolition of the existing gasoline service station, which has four multi-fuel dispensers, and construction of a new service station with eight multi-fuel dispensers and 1 fuel dispenser; a 4,896-square-foot convenience store; and a 2,752-square-foot car wash.
Surtees will present the plans at a Council meeting in March. “Resolutions are generally prepared and available to the public approximately one week before the Council meeting,” he said.
Once the Council approves the site plan, the Valero station owners will need to submit a building plan for review. This Valero station is owned by the Gill family, through their company, APCO Corp. They also own the Valero station and new 7-Eleven on the corner of Route 571 and Alexander Road (The WW-P News, January 4).
Surtees speculated that if all goes well, “the zoning permit may be issued in June, and by the end of the summer they may be breaking ground. The project requires a complete demolition of the existing gas station, so the new service station may not be ready for nearly a year.”
