Board of Education Curriculum Committee, Monday, January 7, at 11 a.m. in the central office. The committee is expected to continue to discuss the possibility of administering the PSAT to all students at district expense as part of a regular school day (WW-P News, December 14).
The subject was raised by board member Richard Kaye at the December 11 meeting. The report in the WW-P News generated one skeptical comment online:
“Is the board in the pockets of the College Board? Who says PSAT is essential? Where is the evidence? If you’re going to mandate a pre-college admissions test, why not give families the option of taking PLAN (ACT’s equivalent) instead of the PSAT? Or why not allow both exams or funding the student or family’s choice? Ironically, for ACT and SAT, over 800 colleges are now test-optional or don’t ask for them (www.fairtest.org).
“College admission test prep is a billion dollar industry. Save that money for college tuition instead. Both ACT & College Board are clearly moving toward earlier testing and academic success skills as we see a move away from SAT & ACT in importance for many universities.”
Board of Education meeting, Tuesday, January 15, 7:30 p.m. at Community Middle School. The agenda may include discussion of whether to move school board elections from April to November.
