Travel Talk with Caryn and Aron: Travel Then and Now

Travel has evolved through the years due to many factors including technological advances and traveler’s tastes and expectations.

When cruising in the 80’s you only had two choices for dinner – early or late seating. Entertainment options were limited to Vegas style revues and often the dancers and singers were also the activities staff and ran bingo and horse racing.

Today you have so many choices for dinner, from freestyle dining to specialty restaurants and now dynamic dining. You can choose what you want to eat and when you want to eat. Onboard entertainment continues to amaze with Broadway hits, Aerialists and activities such as ziplining, surfing, character meet and greets, and poolside movies. You can even ice skate at sea and soon you will be able to roller skate or ride bumper cars. Waterparks used to be limited to local amusement parks and now you have them at sea and at many all-inclusives.

Back in the “good old days” you needed to cram your suitcase with tour books, cameras, and other bulky items. Now you can select an app and have the information at your fingertips including your boarding pass for your flight, resort and cruise, maps, information on sights, translation from another language to English, currency exchange and so much more.

While travel may still be all about the food, the midnight buffet on a cruise ship is gone. Now cruise ships and resort have healthier fare alternatives and address all the dietary concerns of their customers.

When we cruised as a family in the 1980’s there were not separate children’s activities and camps. We sat with our parents on the cruise and hopefully met some other children at the small pools. Even at resorts, the Kids camps had limited activities and hours. Now cruise lines and resorts focus on multi-generational travel with assorted activities for all ages. When we travel our children meet others in their age group and spend the days on the ship hanging with new friends, while the adults can relax in the Solariums or at the spa.

However, what has not changed is the memories that are made. Cruise Planners, an American Express Travel Representative makes it easy to plan that next getaway. Whether you want to travel by land, by sea, or a Completely Packaged Vacation, we are the experts at seamlessly handling all the details.
