Trash Menagerie

Recycle. Realize. Redefine. Reimagine. Recreate. These words define Plainsboro Public Library’s July gallery show featuring art made from recycled materials and found objects. A collaborative effort by members of the library’s artist group, “Trash Menagerie” is an eclectic collection of collage, painting, and sculpture sure to inspire — and inform, since the artists are required to list the recycled ingredients. The art reception on Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. will provide an opportunity for viewers to question the artists about their ideas and methods, as well as hear music from a found object slide guitar and listen to the sounds of “rediscovered” chimes from a mobile. The exhibit runs through July 30.

The Plainsboro Library Artists’ Group includes individuals from many surrounding communities and is represented in this show by several from the West Windsor and Plainsboro area, including Liz Adams, with her whimsical “Class of 2013” collage of Easter candy wrappers; Vimala Arunachalam, showing an architectural scale model of the Tanjore Kovil made entirely of egg cartons; and Tatiana Sougakova, whose “Steamroller of Technology” is made of computer parts.

Also representing the WW-P area are Gabi Muenzel, exhibiting an acrylic-painted assemblage called “Feet in the Sand” and Kathleen Liao, with a recycled assemblage titled “Phoenix Rises from the Trash.”

Found objects are part of the show too, with key pieces including a large resounding mobile by Tad Tallmadge of Lawrenceville; a working slide guitar by Russ Rice of Cranbury, and a mixed-media standing assemblage by South Brunswick’s Art Lee. The show will also feature several collages consisting of multiple “ingredients”: “Keys” by Marcia Tavares of Newtown; “Irish Old Lace” by Elizabeth Peck of Princeton; “Whirlwind” by Elaine Rosenberg of North Brunswick; “Alley” by Nancy Scott of Lawrenceville; and “Lord Ganesh Temple” by Damayanti Avalani of Princeton.

“Each piece of artwork in the show begs to be examined in detail — for the creative use of the recycled materials and the concepts behind the images,” says Donna Senopoulos, gallery director.
