South head football coach Todd Smith resigned from his position on December 11 after eight seasons at the helm.
Smith leaves behind a 63-22 record. He led the Pirates to the sectional final in 2007, the sectional semifinal in 2011, and the West Jersey Football League Colonial Division title this season. Ryan Lupo, Dave Twamley, and Brian Schoenauer, all running backs who played under Smith, each hold a spot on Mercer County’s top 10 career rushing list.
Smith played high school football at Hunterdon Central and then offensive tackle at the College of New Jersey, where he also threw shot put and discus. He graduated in 2001, but he stuck around as a running back coach for one season.
Prior to becoming the head football coach in 2005, Smith amassed a 37-3 record in three seasons as the girls’ cross country coach. He is also currently South’s indoor and spring track head coach.
Smith was the fourth head coach at South since the school’s founding in 1973. Rex Walker coached until 1977. Tom Stuart coached from 1978 until 2002. Louis Solomon coached for two years before Smith took over in 2005.
