Catherine A. Weinfield is returning to her roots to present an oboe recital on Wednesday, May 6, at noon, at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church in Princeton. Weinfield began playing violin in the fourth grade and oboe in the fifth grade. Active in bands and orchestras throughout WW-P schools, she was also a member of Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra and Philadelphia Youth Orchestra in high school. In her freshman year she was in the marching band’s color guard unit.
She received a bachelor’s degree of music in oboe performance from Northwestern University, Class of 2005, and a master’s of music in oboe performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2007. She has a full scholarship for a professional studies diploma in oboe performance from Mannes College, the New School for Music, in New York City. Currently pursuing her post master certificate in a totally performance-based program; she is involved in bands, orchestra chamber groups, and has many gigs around the city.
Although Weinfield lives in Washington Heights, New York, she still maintains a small studio for her Princeton and Lawrenceville area students. She is currently involved with the Metropolitan Opera, substitute English horn; the Mannes Orchestra, principal oboe and English horn; the Chelsea Symphony, principal oboe 2008; Symphony in C, substitute Oboe and English horn;
Her older sister, Liz, a graduate of WW-P High School, Class of 1998, also lives in New York City and works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Pursuing her doctorate degree as a musicologist, she plays the viola de gamba and is currently founding the Baroque Opera Company. Her younger sister, Maddy, a graduate of High School South, Class of 2006, is in her third year of college in Switzerland majoring in literature.
Her parents live in West Windsor. Her mother, Barbara, sells real estate with Weichert Realtors in West Windsor. She sings with Voices Chorale. Her father, Anthony, is a computer programmer with Travel Security Agency (TSA). An accomplished composer and pianist, he is a graduate of Juilliard. “A couple of years ago he wrote a couple of pieces including an oboe sonata,” Catherine says. “He’s currently working on a very intense big piece for a choir and orchestra.” Anthony Weinfield will accompany his daughter on piano at the concert.
