The West Windsor-Plainsboro School Board has approved an alternate method to replace the annual evaluation required of tenured teachers in the district.##M:[more]## The measure was approved by the board at its meeting on August 23.
State law calls for tenured teachers to be observed once a year and receive a written evaluation of their performance. The district’s new policy allows tenured teachers the option of substituting a “high-quality professional growth project” instead of the traditional written evaluation, which is performed by their immediate supervisor.
“The objective of the alternate evaluation is to develop a model that features innovative options for the assessment of tenured staff,” says Superintendent Robert Loretan. “This model promotes professional learning through a structured, supportive, and collaborative environment.”
The school board “expects all administrators to observe and evaluate teachers in an on-going fashion and this model allows the professional staff to choose a professional growth experience with the goal of increasing student learning as part of the process,” states the resolution approved by the board.
The new policy was recommended by a committee comprised of WW-P administrators and teachers. It has also been endorsed by the West Windsor-Plainsboro Education Association teachers’ union.
In other business, at its meeting on August 23, the School Boardtook the following actions:
Approved the appointment of Michael Rettig as an educational consultant for middle school scheduling in the amount of $2,”000 per day plus expenses, for a period not to exceed five days.
Approved an application for a two-year grant of $58,”000 for Adult Basic Skills and Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education Grant Programs from the state.
Approved grant applications to the to provide services to disabled students for $1.48 million.
Rescinded a bid award for $20,”392 to Scott’s Emergency Lighting & Power Generation for emergency generators and associated equipment after finding that the company was a non-qualified bidder. The bid was then awarded to Advance Electric for $22,”722.
Awarded a bid for the science wing HVAC pipe insulation at High School South for $44,”700.
Awarded a bid for pool repairs at HS South to RJR Engineering for $110,”000.
Awarded line item bids for printing to Michael’s Kwik Print for $4,”033, First Occupational Center of NJ for $3,”830, Prints of Windsor for $3,”339, Minuteman Press of Hamilton for $2,”870, Hermitage Press for $2,”306, and Graphic Color for $2,”100.
Accepted $4,”474 from the state for the Evening School for Foreign-Born Residents grant for the year 2005. The grant is being matched by WW-P Community Education.
Accepted $27,”724 from the state to provide services for student who attend non-public schools.
