The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, a Central New Jersey museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the African American experience, invites the public to its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration, Stories of Freedom, on Saturday June 21 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Mt. Zion AME Church and Reasoner/True House in Skillman.
Event highlights include a live performance by the SSAAM Heritage Singers and Band. Also set to perform is Keith Spencer, baritone and storyteller, who will look to bring freedom narratives to life through music and spoken word.
Luna Stage: The Ground On Which We Stand will take a theatrical journey exploring themes of identity, resistance and remembrance, and Mr. Boom Boom’s Drum Circle looks to offer a high-energy, all-ages drum experience uniting rhythm and community.
On exhibit will be “The Head That Wears the Crown,” an exhibition exploring the cultural and spiritual legacy of African-American women’s headwear across generations.
There will also be guided tours of the National Historic Register-listed Mt. Zion AME Church, SSAAM’s Heritage Garden and the museum grounds.
Community activities are set to include a story booth, spoken word and read-alouds, museum scavenger hunts, and a Little Free Library of banned books.
Tickets are $20 for adults online, $25 at the door. Children 14 and under are $10 online, $15 at the door. All tickets include access to performances, exhibits, activities and food. The event will be held rain or shine.
