Aside from the tennis team claiming its first-ever county championship, North has much to be proud of this season.
The North boys’ track and field team fought its way past county powerhouse Trenton to claim the title at the Mercer County Track & Field Championships at Steinert on May 9, after garnering six first-place finishes out of 17 events.
In the 4×800-meter relay, Matthew Kelly, Mohan Yenugadhati, Anthony Lee, and Stephen Ellwood took the gold in the 4×800-meter relay. Sean Reed took the gold in the 400; and Tyler Corkedale won the 800. Jim and Joe Rosa, as well as Jonathan Squeri and Anthony Lee took the top four spots in the 1,”600. Corey Abernathy then took first in the shot put to finish off Trenton.##M:[more]##
Also at North, the boys’ baseball team slaughtered Nottingham, 13-0, on May 12, to advance to the Mercer County Tournament finals, which will be played on Friday, May 15, at 5 p.m. at Waterfront Park against Steinert. Pitcher Dave Bachner pitched his first career no-hitter, striking out 12 and walking five along the way.
Meanwhile, also at North, A.J. Reichert, on North’s boys’ lacrosse team, hit his 100th career goal against Old Bridge on May 5, helping the Knights to win 12-4. In that game, Reichert scored three goals.
And, the Lady Knights’ softball team, with a record of 13-3, has clinched its fourth consecutive CVC Valley Division title in its win on May 11 over Nottingham, 3-0.
But North has not been the only one achieving accolades this season. On May 5, Dave Twamley, of South’s boys’ lacrosse team had six assists in South’s win over South Brunswick, 14-3, allowing him to hit 100 assists for his career at South. He also had one goal in the game. Twamley is now South’s all-time leading scorer in boys’ lacrosse.
South’s softball team is also heading to the final round of the Mercer County Tournament after defeating Ewing on May 12. The Pirates were scheduled to face Allentown in the final on May 14, after the News’ deadline.
