American Legion

Girls’ Softball

North (16-7): A win against South, 6-0, on May 31, to claim the Colonial Valley Conference Colonial Division title. Kaitlin Perrine struck out eight batters. Sarah Bush hit a grand slam and had 5 RBIs. Sydney Turchin hit a single and a double. Emily Weinberg had two hits.

A win against Princeton, 8-5, on May 26. Kaitlin Perrine allowed two hits and struck out six.

South (12-7): A win against Notre Dame, 3-0, on June 2. Rachel Gagliardo struck out five batters. Liz Mendez hit an RBI double.

A loss to North, 6-0, on May 31.

A loss to Hillsborough, 3-0, on May 26 in the Central Jersey Group IV tournament. Kat Philbin and Anna Schnitter hit singles.

Boys’ Tennis

South (23-1): The doubles team of Abhinay Tumati and Thomas Weng fell to their oppenents from Millburn on June 8 in the state doubles tournament.

The doubles team of Abhinay Tumati and Thomas Weng defeated their opponents from Newark Academy, 6-4, 6-1, on June 7 in the NJSIAA boys’ doubles tennis tournament.

A loss to Livingston, 4-1, on May 26 in the New Jersey Group IV Final, the first time the Pirates reached the state final since 2006. Doubles: 1.) Peter Ku/John Hu, 7-5, 6-4.

A win against Ridge, 3.5-1.5, on May 26 in the NSIAA Group IV Tournament semifinals. Singles: 2.) Daniel Ng, 6-4, 3-6. Third Singles: 3.) Daniel Vaysburd, 6-0, 6-3. Doubles: 1.) John Hu/Peter Ku, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. 2.) Abhinay Tumati/Nikhil Gavai, 6-1, 6-4.

Boys’ Track

North: The team finished third, with 48 points, at the Group III Championships on June 3 and 4. Joe Rosa won the 3,2000-meter run with a time of 8:56.91, which set Group III and All-Groups records. It is his fourth title. His brother, Jim, also finished under the Group III record of 9:02.38 — which he, himself, set in 2009 — with his new time of 9:01.09. But Joe Rosa’s time also broke the record for all groups combined, which was 8:58.30, set in 1999. Greg Caldwell won the 110M hurdles to re-set North’s record in a time of 14.42. Joe Rosa won the 1,600, with a time of 4:10.78. Jim Rosa placed second in the 1,600, with a time of 4:11.78. Chris Banks placed sixth in the 400, with a time of 50.41, and in the 200, with a time of 22.37.

The team finished second in the Group III sectional finals, with 73 points, on May 28. Greg Caldwell won the 110 hurdles. Joe Rosa won the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:04.75. He placed second in the 1,600 meters. Veer Bhalla placed third in the 800 meters. Jim Rosa placed third in the 1,600 and the 3,200 meters. Pat O’Connell placed fourth in the 1,600 meters. Casey Dalrymple placed fifth in the 3,200 meters. Juwan Lee placed third in the triple jump. North placed fifth in the 4×400. Ten of the team’s members and two relays, the 4×400 and the 4×800, advanced to the Group III state meet.

South: The team finished 22nd at the NJSIAA Group IV Championships on June 4. 1,600: 3.) Brian Schoepfer, 4:15.15. Pole Vault: 5.) Dan Callahan, 13-6.

South finished sixth, with 38 points, in the Central Jersey Group IV finals on May 28. Zach Rosenberg placed fifth in the 400 meters. A.J. Chavez placed sixth in the 400 meters. Dharan Kadiyala placed fifth in the 800 meters. Dan Riff was third in the 3,200 meters. Jacob Riff was sixth in the 3,200 meters. South’s 4×400 relay team placed fourth. South advanced seven members and two relays to the state meet.

South tied for third, with 25 points, with Sayreville in the Central Jersey Group IV sectional final on May 27 — the first of a two-day meet. Dan Callahan placed second in the pole vault, 13-6. Brian Schoepfer placed second in the 1,600, with a time of 4:18.11. Jacob Riff placed third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:20.50.

Girls’ Track

North: Patrycja Dziekonska qualified for the Meet of Champions in the 100-meter hurdles with her fifth-place finish with a time of 14.82 at the NJSIAA Group III championships.

The team finished in fourth place, with 63 points, in the state sectional final on May 28. Christina LiPuma won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:04.39. She also placed fourth in the 400 meters. Marilyn Allen placed second in the 400 hurdles, with a time of 1:04.90. Pati Dziekonska won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.94. She also placed fourth in the long jump. Simone Counts placed third in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 800. Rebecca Jin placed sixth in the pole vault. The 4×400 relay team placed second.

South: The team finished in fifth place, with 26 points, at the NJSIAA Group IV Championships on June 4. 400: 3.) Emily Mauro, 57.27. 800: 3.) Emily Mauro, 2:11.83. 3200: 2.) Caroline Kellner, 10:48.09. High Jump: 4.) Paige Brown, 5-4. 4×400: 5.) South (Cai-Cai Hahn, Victoria Matthews, Emily Mauro, Ashleigh Delemos), 3:57.45.

The team finished in second place, with a score of 63, in the second day of the Central Jersey Group IV sectional final on May 28. Emily Mauro won the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.29. The Pirates’ 4×400 team placed fifth, with a time of 4:01.93. Caroline Kellner won the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:52.58. Ashleigh Delemos placed third in the 200 meters. Michelle Gao tied for fourth in the pole vault, at 9-6.

The team was in first place after the first day of the competition on May 27, leading South Brunswick, 32-29. Emily Mauro won the 400-meter dash, with a school record 56.71. Paige Brown placed second in the high jump, with a 5-4. Ashleigh Delemos placed third in the 100 with a time of 12.59. Caroline Kellner placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:05.17.

Sports Briefs

West Windsor resident Isabelle Peel placed second in the A division 50 back (39.70) and seventh in the 50 breast (46.78) in the 10 and under age group at the Long Course Meters Meet at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology on May 7. She also placed second in the 200 IM (3:15.95), 50 fly (37.65), and fourth in the 100 back (1:29.90) at the 2011 Princeton Tigers Long Course Meters Challenge at DeNunzio Pool on May 15.

West Windsor resident Jack McIntyre placed first in the A Division at the Long Course Meters in the 100 fly (1:10.99), 100 free (1:03.24), 200 IM (2:37.16) and 50 free (29.87) in the 11-12 age group. He also placed second in the 50 breast (39.43), 400 free (4:47.00), 200 free (2:17.46), and 50 fly (33.33). He also placed first in the 800 free (9:53.32), 200 IM (2:36.67), and 100 free (1:03.98) at the 2011 Princeton Tigers Long Course Meters Challenge at DeNunzio Pool on May 15.

In the 13-14 Age Group at the Long Course Meters, West Windsor resident Marissa Kirkendoll placed first in the BB Division 200 IM (2:51.69) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:33.02). West Windsor resident Faith Rogers placed sixth in the A Division 100 free (1:07.25). All swim for the Eastern Express swim club.
