Sochi Dispatch

Former Plainsboro resident and High School South alumna Felicia Zhang competed with Nathan Bartholomay in the pairs figure skating competition on February 11 and 12. The duo finished in 12th place behind a one-two finish by Russian pairs and a ninth place finish by the other American team.

Girls’ Winter Track

South placed fourth overall at the Central Group IV Sectional Championships on Saturday, February 8.

Deirdre Casey, one of the team’s top contributors all season, had the best finishes of the day at second in the 1600, sixth in the 800 and as the first runner in the 4×400 along with Edlyn Gulama, Edwina Gulama and Kathryn Schoenauer. Christina Rancan earned second place in the 3200 and third in the 1600.

Edyln Gulama and Haley Rich finished in fifth and seventh in the 800, respectively. Schoenauer had a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, and Kalayha Smith was the top South field event finisher, tied for seventh in the high jump.

South placed fifth at the NJSIAA Group 4 Championship on Monday, February 17. Casey was the team’s top finisher, winning the 1600 with a time on 4:59.90. Rancan placed second in the 3200 in 11:08. She and Rancan will compete at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, March 1.

North finished in second place at the Central Jersey Group III Sectional Championship on Saturday, February 8. Pati Dziekonska won both the 55 hurdles and 55-yard dash, in which Margaux Powell also finished seventh. Simone Counts earned a third-place finish in the 800 and a fifth-place finish in the 1600. Olivia Harpel finished sixth in the 55 hurdles. Annie Voltmer notched a third-place finish in the pole vault.

Dziekonska, Counts, Harpel, and Voltmer will compete in the Group III Championship on Thursday, February 20, for a chance to qualify for the Meet of Champions.

Boys’ Winter Track

South finished third at the Central Jersey Group IV Sectional Championships on Saturday, February 8, led by Karn Setya, who notched a first-place finish in the 3200 as well as a fourth-place finish in the 1600.

Jake Arbeiter finished third in the 800 and fourth in the 400, and Nikhil Pulminood finished second in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600.

South shared fourth place with J.P. Stevens at the NJSIAA Group IV Championship on Monday, February 17. Setya again led the Pirates with a first-place 9:23 finish in the 3200. Pulminood placed third in the same race in 9:34. Setya has been one of the team’s top performers, placing first in the 3200 and third in the 1600 at last month’s county championship meet.

North finished in seventh place at the Central Jersey Group III Sectional Championship on Saturday, February 8. Aleks Rzempoluch had the team’s best finish, coming in second in the high jump. CJ Markisz finished fourth in the 400-meter dash and eighth in the 55-meter dash. Samuel Praveen came in seventh in the 1600. Rzempoluch and Markisz will compete at the Group III Championships on Thursday, February 20.

Boys’ Basketball

South defeated North 50-44 on Friday, February 7. Kareem Elhossieni led the Pirates with 19 points, while C.J. Howell had 9. Tommy Hussong scored 7. For the Knights, Juwan Harrison scored 16 points, while Kevin Murphy and Isaiah Powell each had 10.

Karoline Sandvig led South with 9 points, while Annie Yuan had 7. Alyssen Rivers and Kate McCormick each scored 6.

Ice Hockey

South defeated North 7-3 on Friday, February 7. Brian Tso, Jeremy Wong, Matthew Sayde, Patrick Menninger, and Jonathan Matthews all scored for the Pirates. Andrew Holubec made 24 saves. For the Knights, Adam Lohr-Pearson, Greg Olsson, and Alex Richman netted one each. Ian Schwartz made 25 stops.

The teams faced off again on Friday, February 14. South came out on top again, this time 8-0. Steven Cangelosi scored twice for South. Jeremy Greener, Shikky Rathor, Matthews, Sayde, Tso, and Wong scored one apiece. Holubec made 42 saves, while North goalie Ruairidh Rimmer made 12.
