A second-place finish, with 91 points, the ‘B’ Division race at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park on October 4. Katie Kellner took first place in that division with a time of 18:35. Her sister, Caroline Kellner, took fifth place with a time of 19:43.

Boys Cross Country

North: The Knights took 7 of the top 9 spots in the meet at Veterans Park on October 7 against South, Princeton, Lawrenceville, and Hightstown. 1.) Anthony Lee, 16:47; 3.) Joe Rosa, 16:48; 4.) A first place finish, with 43 points, in the ‘B’ Division race at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park on October 4, with Joe Rosa having the best time in the state, 15:38. His first place performance beat the prior sopomore course record of 15:46. Jim Rosa took fourth place, with a time of 16:17. Ryan Sleeper took 7th place, with a time of 16:33.

South: Sam Macaluso took second place in the race at Veterans Park on October 7 against North, Princeton, Lawrenceville, and Hightstown. His time was 16:48. 7.) Kevin Foy, 16:54; 14.) D.J. Hiller, 17:08; 15.) Jeff McKee, 17:12.

Sports Briefs

The Mercer Masters Rowing Program, which is sponsored by the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA), will be giving adults the opportunity to participate in its fall Learn to Row program. Upon completion of the Learn to Row program, participants will have the option of pursuing the sport with the Mercer Masters in either a recreational or competitive capacity. The Learn to Row program will consist of seven 2 hour sessions held weekends in October and November. Those dates are Saturday, October 11, from 8 to 10 a.m.; Sunday, October 12, from 2 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, November 1, from 8 to 10 a.m.; Sunday, November 2, from 2 to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, November 8, from 8 to 10 a.m. The cost of the program is $250. The West Windsor Plainsboro Boys Tornadoes U9 soccer team defeated South Brunswick Blizzard, 4-1. Keith Register, Conor Kelly, and Julien Zhang scored the goals. The defensive backfield consisted of David Corell, Daniel Joseph, Daniel Kelly, and Keith Register. The offensive line consisted of Alex Arias, Kieran Ireland, Ajun Wit, and Gautham Yalla. The goal keepers for Tornadoes were Daniel Kelly, Conor Kelly, Julian Zhang, and Rocco Giancarli.

The team suffered a 5-0 loss on October 5 to the Sayreville Eagles. The Tornadoes to the Sayreville Eagles in their Mid-New Jersey Youth League game on Sunday. Goalkeeper Daniel Kelly had 10 saves. Keith Register, Alex Arias, and Julian Zhang, on defense, forced eight shots to go wide.

West Windsor resident Jack Gleim finished first in the 15-and-under age division with a time of 20:14 at the Run for Mito 5K in Philadelphia on September 13. He finished seventh overall. With a time of 22:06, West Windsor resident John Ward finished 15th, and with a time of 22:35, West Windsor resident Cameron Ward finished 18th.

West Windsor residents Steve and Stewart Fernandez, High School South graduates, and freshmen on the College of New Jersey’s men’s tennis team, took part in the 2008 ITA Northeast Championships at Mill Creek Park Tennis Club on October 3. Stewart opened with a 6-4, 3-6, victory against an opponent from Hobart, but fell in the second round to an opponent from Skidmore, 6-3, 6-4. Steve fell in his first-round match to an opponent from Manhattanville, 6-1, 6-0.

West Windsor resident Adam Racer Schuit, a June graduate of High School North, scored his first goal in Cornell’s water polo club team 14-8 season-opener victory against the University of Rochester September 20. At North, Schuit was a captain of the swim team and a varsity pitcher.

High School North graduate Christine Franz scored two goals and an assist for Ithaca College’s field hockey team. Her goals came in a 4-0 win over Brockport and a 6-5 win over Wooster. She also had an assist in the team’s win over Oneonta, 3-1, on October 1.

High School North graduate Stephanie Lally has two goals and three assists so far for the Crown College women’s soccer team. One goal and an assist came in the team’s opening win over Wisconsin-Superior, 2-0, and another came in the team’s 2-1 win over Northland College.

West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh and the township held a ceremony in honor of Stephen J. Wiener, on September 20. The township’s new basketball courts located in Community Park were dedicated and named after the well-known youth basketball coach, who died last fall. In 1998 he founded the Lady Hawks Women’s basketball league in West Windsor.

High School North graduate and West Windsor resident Lilly Pepper, a freshman at Trinity College, has played in three games, two as the starting goalkeeper, for the college’s women’s soccer team. She has allowed only two goals. She made five saves in the team’s shutout of Manhatanville, and had two saves in its shutout against Clark.

Matt Davidson, of West Windsor and a 1999 Mercer County scholastic champion, shot an even-par 71-73—144 in the Tar Heel Tour’s S&K Series Columbia Open in Blythewood, S.C. He was one shot off making the cut of 1-under-par.

West Windsor resident and High School South graduate Amy Hashem, a senior on the College of New Jersey’s soccer team, stopped two back-to-back shots, including a penalty kick, in the team’s defeat of New Jersey City University, 10-0, on October 4.
