Former Plainsboro resident Rebecca Soni won the gold medal in the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.05 at the FINA swimming world championships on July 26. She beat Leisel Jones, of Australia, an Olympic champion. In the 2008 Summer Olympics, Soni won three medals — a gold and two silver medals, one in the 100-meter breaststroke (won by Jones in what was then a world record time), and the other as part of the women’s 4×100 medley relay.

West Windsor resident Anthony Aloi, a South graduate, won the 7th New Jersey Men’s Public Links Championship on July 21 at Heron Glen Golf Course. The accomplishment comes just two weeks after he won the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Public Links title. He shot a 70-72-142.

West Windsor resident Ryan Siegler finished the year with a slew of accolades. He won the Cherry Valley Tournament with a 66 and won the Optimist Qualifier for the Southern/Central NJ and parts of PA, which allowed him to advance to the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens last month, where he played in the Optimist International Junior Championships. Siegler and West Windsor resident Charles Cai also competed in the Big I State Qualifier, both advancing to play in Madison, Mississippi on August 1 in the BIG I National Championships.

Siegler also won the Christman Cup last month at the Bidermann Golf Club in Wilmington, DE for the GAP (Greater Area of Philadelphia) golf. He shot 74 and 73. He was chosen to participate in the Williamson Invitational on Aug 7.

West Windsor resident Isabelle Peel, who swims for Eastern Express (EEX), placed sixth in the 100 fly (1:29.71) and seventh in the 50 free (34.42) in the 10 and under group at the Jersey Wahoos Long Course Spring Fling last month.

EEX swimmers also competed at Rutgers on June 4, in the Scarlet Aquatic Club Heat Madness 2011. In the 13-14 age group, West Windsor resident Jack McIntyre placed first in the 200 fly (2:40.42) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:37.69). West Windsor resident Faith Rogers placed seventh in the 200 back (2:42.86).

Peddie Aquatics’ swimmers swam to 33 finals finishes (top eight), with five qualifying times for Junior Nationals, 15 qualifying times for Super Sectionals, and 26 qualifying times for Eastern Zones at the New Jersey Long Course Junior Olympics, held July 28 through 31 at Rutgers University.

Swimming in 15 & over events at NJ Junior Olympics, West Windsor resident Patrick Park won the 100 fly (56.80 Jrs), 100 free (53.39 Sect), and 200 IM (2:10.62 Jrs) and finished third in both the 100 breast (1:07.43 Jrs) and 200 free (1:58.08 Sect). In the 13-14 year old events, West Windsor resident Emily Schroeder finished third in the 100 fly (1:06.61 Sect), fourth in the 100 free (1:00.70 Sect), 200 IM (2:28.78 Sect), 200 back (2:31.25 Zone), and 200 fly (2:31.52 Zone), and fifth in the 50 free (28.10 Sect) and 200 free (2:13.92 Zone). West Windsor resident Roman Horoszewski finished third in the 800 free (9:18.24 Zone), fifth in the 1500 free (17:57.61 Zone), and sixth in the 200 free (2:08.99 Zone). Syed finished eighth in the 800 free (9:45.52 Zone).

“Zone” qualifying times were also swum by Roman Horoszewski in the 13/14 400 IM (5:13.04) Princeton Junction resident Laura Loughran in the 15 & over 200 free (2:16.41); and Syed in the 13/14 50 free (29.49), 100 free (1:03.18), 200 free (2:15.99), 100 fly (1:10.34) and 400 free (4:46.66).
