Linda Bregstein Scherr, a faculty member at Mercer College and a Plainsboro resident, received the 2008 Community College Spirit Award from New Jersey Council of County Colleges on June 16.##M:[more]##
Scherr was recognized for her leadership and service as co-chair of the general education coordinating committee, a group of academic officers and faculty that has worked to develop a uniform general education model for New Jersey’s 19 community colleges.
“Since its inauguration in 1993, the Community College Spirit Award has been an honor bestowed to those who embody the community college spirit — perseverance, dedication and excellence,” said council chairman Richard Wellbrock. “The General Education Coordinating Committee’s work will ensure that community college students throughout the state take the right general education courses to smoothly transfer to four-year colleges and universities.”
Scherr, a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in history and near Eastern studies, holds a doctorate in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania.
A faculty member at Mercer since 1998, Scherr teaches Western civilization and world history, and oversees the college’s general education program, including curriculum development. Scherr, who also serves as chair of the social science program and the honor’s program council, formerly served as chair of the liberal arts program, and is a member of the faculty association executive committee.
“I am honored to be recognized for my statewide work,” said Scherr. “The new legislation will have a huge impact on our students who plan to transfer to one of New Jersey’s public colleges and I am very gratified to have the opportunity to support the transfer framework.”
