High School South competed and won the Shore Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. The bowl, held at Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Science, tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team-challenge questions.
The winning team from High School South is coached by Sunila Sharma. The team members include Aleck Zhao, Yan Hueng, Ishan Mazumdar, Dhruva Byruputna and Angela You.
The team will compete against 22 other regional champions in the upcoming 18th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl, at University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab from April 23 to 26, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The theme of the 2015 NOSB is the science of oil in the ocean, a timely and relevant topic given that 2015 marks the five year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico.
“We are excited to have brought the topic of oil in the ocean to our students this year. It is playing a growing role in coastal and offshore areas around the U.S., not to mention our nation’s economy,” said Kristen Yarincik, director of the NOSB at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. “These bright students are the future stewards of our ocean, so it is important for them to learn about the applied role of science and the importance of ocean and coastal health considerations when setting policy and making management decisions.”
