From the Annual Pirate Invitational last weekend to a win against North the week before, the Lady Pirates have gone 8-1 overall in the Colonial Division and are 8-0 in their conference.
In the meet against North, sophomores Meredith Ketchmark and Rebecca Lewinson helped carry the Pirates to a 113-57 victory. In that match, Ketchmark swam to four event victories, two of which resulted in new CVC lows. In the 100-meter freestyle, she swam a time of 1:00.64, and completed the 200-meter individual medley in 2:30.50. Ketchmark also swam on the winning relay teams in the 200-meter freestyle (along with her sister Jenna, and Lewinson and Paola Simon) and 400-meter freestyle with Simon, Brynja Winnan, and Amanda Grant.
At the Pirate Invitational the following week, she finished second place in the individual medley, and swam a time of 5:10.33 for second place in the 500-yard freestyle.
Ketchmark isn’t the only leader on the team. Against North, Lewinson swam the 100-meter breaststroke in a new low time of 1:16.43 and placed second in the 100-meter butterfly.
At the Pirate Invitational Lewinson really got the spotlight, being named the Pirate Invitational Most Valuable Swimmer after taking first in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley and breaking her own school records by swimming the breaststroke in 1:05.23 and the individual medley in 2:09.16.
The team took second place out of 10 teams at the Invitational, with Winnan and Paola Simon also contributing. They, along with Ketchmark and Lewinson, broke a school record in the 200 medley relay by swimming it in 1:50.53. Winnan also had four victories against North, as she took first in the 50-meter free with a time of 27.95, and in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:07.67. Both of those were also CVC records. She took second in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke at the Pirate Invitational.
Joey Grant, of the South boys’ swim team also had a great showing at the Pirates, with two first-place finishes in the 50- and 100- yard freestyle. Hugh Le took third in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.
The team placed fifth at the match, but have also had an impressive run this year. Grant and Le, along with Mike Prewett, have helped lead their team all season long. In the match against North, each had four first-place wins. Prewett had first place finishes in the 100- and 200- meter freestyles, and was part of the winning 200-meter medley relay. The relay team, also consisting of Le, Alp Yurter, and Steve Park, swam for 1:57.91, a CVC-low time. Prewett’s time of 57.88 in the 100-meter freestyle was a new low conference time. Against North, Le swam a low time of 1:05.40 in the 100-meter backstroke, and placed first in the 200-meter individual medley.
North’s swim teams also have the benefit of being well-rounded. The boys are led by Nick Covey and Derek Chiao. Against South, Covey finished first in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:02.79. The boys are in first place with a record of 8-2 in the Colonial Valley Conference Valley Division, and the North girls, 7-2, are also in first place.
