So Percussion is set to present several performances in conjunction with its sixth annual Summer Institute.
The So Percussion Summer Institute is an intensive two-week chamber music seminar for college-age percussionists and composers. The four members of So Percussion serve as faculty in rehearsal, performance and discussion of contemporary music.
In 2014, SoSI will focus on the intersection between percussion and electronics, a relationship that goes back to many of the masters of the art form such as Cage, Varese, and Reich.
Nine concerts with 18 world premieres and 14 performances of works by Princeton-affiliated composers are scheduled to take place all over the Princeton community during the program.
SoSI is set to kick off with the American Composers Forum Competition Finals 8 p.m. July 20 at the Matthews Acting Studio at the Lewis Center for the Arts, 185 Nassau St., Princeton. The members of So Percussion selected three young composers out of more than 250 applications to write specially commissioned new pieces for percussion quartet. So Percussion will premiere their new pieces and select one grand-prize winner.
SoSI is set to perform with special guests Matmos, Kid Millions, and Brian Chase 6:30 p.m. July 23 at Silent Barn, 603 Bushwick Ave, New York, N.Y. Tickets are $12.
SoSI participants perform are set to perform 4 p.m. July 24 at Princeton Record Exchange, 20 South Tulane Street, Princeton. Admission is free.
Princeton Composers Concert, an annual concert of commissioned world premieres from Princeton graduate students, is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 26 at Matthews Acting Studio. Admission is free.
Another free concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 28 at Princeton University’s Woolworth Center in McAlpin Hall. The concert features percussionist Stuart Gerber and pianist Stephen Drury playing works by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Luther Adams.
SoSI partipants are set to perform outdoors 7:30 p.m. July 29 at the Albert Hinds Plaza located at Witherspoon and Spring streets in Princeton. Admission is free.

Summer Institute Closing Marathon featuring music by Michael Gordon, John Cage, Dmitri Tymoczko, Ju Ri Seo and Dan Trueman is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Aug. 2 at Matthews Acting Studio. Admission is free.
