Richard Hawryluk of West Windsor recently received two honors — the Fusion Power Associates (FPA) 2007 Leadership Award and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow award. He is a deputy director at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in Plainsboro.##M:[more]##
A leader in magnetic fusion energy research whose career in the field spans 30 years, Hawryluk received the leadership award in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The organization noted Hawryluk’s scientific leadership in past and present fusion projects at PPPL — including as head of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) project when it produced record breaking results, and of his recent involvement with ITER, an international fusion project being planned for construction in France.
Hawryluk will receive a certificate and rosette pin at AAAS’s annual meeting in Boston in February in recognition “for pioneering contributions to the physics of deuterium-tritium plasmas, and for outstanding scientific leadership of the experiments on TFTR.”
“Rich Hawryluk is a great scientific leader and very much deserves this award,” says PPPL director Rob Goldston. “His leadership and scientific insights have driven forward a long series of successful programs at PPPL, and now he is also driving forward key scientific analyses for ITER.”
Hawryluk received his bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees in physics, all from MIT. A member of PPPL’s research staff since 1974, he has published more than 150 research papers in journals and conference proceedings and has served on many advisory and review committees. Hawryluk received the Kaul Foundation Prize for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research and Technology in 1996, the U.S. Department of Energy Distinguished Associate Award in 1995, and the American Physical Society Prize for Excellence in Plasma Physics in 1988. Hawryluk is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Igor Kaganovich, a research physicist at PPPL, was named a fellow with the American Physical Society. A West Windsor resident, he was recognized for his pioneering contributions to the kinetic theory and kinetic modeling of plasmas.
He is the author of more than 50 publications in his field, where he specializes in theoretical and computational modeling of plasmas.
He received a master’s in applied physics and a doctorate in physics and mathematics, both from St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University (now the Polytechnical University of Russia) and joined PPPL in 2000 as a research associate.
