High School South’s theater department presents “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” a poignant comedy following the life of Eugene Jerome, a Polish-Jewish American teenager growing up in Brooklyn during the 1930s. Eugene dreams of baseball and girls while coping with chaotic, everyday family life — a worrywart mother, an idolized big brother, a distant aunt, a beautiful cousin, a tirelessly working father, and a cousin who supposedly crumbles at the touch. This American classic by Neil Simon was the first in a trilogy, followed by “Biloxi Blues” and “Broadway Bound.” Show dates are Thursday to Saturday, November 19 to 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the South Playhouse. Tickets are $10.
Cast members include Eric Judson, Robert Rackmil, Marco Kaisth, Lora Riehl, Sophia DiLeo, Emma Kothari, and Adrienne Kaplowitz. When compulsive neatnik Felix Ungar is thrown out of his house by his wife, he winds up at the apartment of his best friend, incorrigibly sloppy and divorced sportswriter Oscar Madison. Worried that Felix will try something desperate, Oscar invites Felix to move in with him.
Within a few days, this mismatched pair is on the verge of disaster. To improve the situation, Oscar arranges a romantic evening for himself and Felix with the Pigeon sisters, two attractive upstairs neighbors. Felix, ruminating over his wife and children, reduces the ladies to tears over their own broken marriages.
