Parents looking for a different summer experience for their kids, including flexible scheduling and an extra two weeks of camp for preschoolers, need look no further than Schafer School of Gymnastics.

The school’s new Pre Camp means up to 13 weeks of summer fun are available at Schafer School of Gymnastics. Pre Camp is for 3- to 5-year-olds and runs June 7 to 18. It’s a half-day, 9 a.m. to noon, plus an extended option to 1 p.m.

“A lot of preschools get out before their school-aged siblings,” said owner Shannon Schafer. “Pre Camp is just another way we’re flexible, and that appeals to parents.”

Flexibility is key at Schafer, which is typically one of the only camps open throughout the summer to the start of school. Schafer says parents may pick as little as one day or the entire 13 weeks. Early drop off, extended hours, morning and afternoon options and more make Schafer attractive to busy parents.

“While we do prefer advanced notice, we’re always willing to take students, even the day-of, space permitting,” Schafer added. “Our program emphasizes fun and challenging activities, a chance for your child to enjoy healthy play in a safe environment.”

Each week of camp at Schafer is themed for added variety. Gymnastics activities are mixed with recreational games and arts and crafts. And each week there is Pizza Friday, a popular option parents can choose so their kids can lunch with others at the gym.

“Our school has been open for 22 years,” Schafer said. “It’s family-oriented; we truly care about our students. We know their names. We know what they like. It’s our great pleasure to teach them gymnastics skills and to see them learn. That carries over to camp.”

In addition to summer camp, Schafer School of Gymnastics will offer summer evening classes. And for those who can’t wait for summer, there are Spring Break Camps that coincide with local school districts’ winter vacations.

Schafer prides herself on reaching out to the community. A passion of hers is working with children who have autism, which she’s been doing on an individual basis for the past six years. Recently, she’s added group classes that bring parents into the mix. Her goal is to transition autistic children to a typical gymnastics class so they can enjoy the social component.

“During Autism Month, April, we’re hosting a free month of activities for autistic children and their parents,” she noted. “And this year, we’re incorporating children with autism into summer camp.”

Parents and kids who want to learn more about Schafer School of Gymnastics’ Summer Camp should attend an upcoming open house: Sunday, March 14, from noon to 2 p.m., or Saturday, April 17, from noon to 1:30 p.m. There’s also information online at www.Schafergymnastics.com.
