Robbinsville Township police are asking residents and business owners to register their privately owned surveillance systems with department’s C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program.
As police officers respond to criminal incidents in the township, they may be able to use footage gathered from the exterior security cameras to assist in apprehension and prosecution. Police say the new C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program will help officers quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured criminal activity.
After registering a camera, police said residents will only be contacted by the department if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of their security camera system. The officers, if necessary, may request to view camera footage in order to assist in an investigation.
There is no fee required to register a camera system. The C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program is not an active surveillance program, and the police will not have direct access to any of the registered private camera systems. Police also said the registration information will be housed in a secure network and all information will be kept confidential.
Residents and business owners can ask to remove their camera from the system at any time. Police cannot provide active surveillance of private property, and it is not to be construed as a promise or obligation to provide any additional level of safety or security to private property.
