Princeton University Jazz Program announces new season

The Princeton University Jazz Program announced its concerts for the 2014-15 season.

In addition to the regular Jazz @ Café Vivian and Jazz Vespers at the University Chapel series, the new seasons is set to feature collaborations with the University Glee Club and University Chapel Choir as well as guest artist presentations with Grammy-winning saxophonist Mark Gross, vocalist Alison Crockett, pianist/composer Barry Miles, plus international performers that include trumpeter Artur Majewski from Poland and vocalist Anne-Liis Poll from Estonia.

Throughout the years, the Princeton University Jazz Program, under the direction of Dr. Anthony D.J. Branker, has sought to educate and expose the university community to the artistic and historical significance of jazz by presenting artists and repertoire that are representative of the wide spectrum of styles and conceptual approaches found throughout the music’s evolution.

Scheduled performances for the 2014-15 season follows:

Oct. 8, 8 p.m. at Princeton University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

Oct. 9, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring the University Jazz Composers Collective coached by Dr. Anthony Branker. Free admission.

Oct. 11, 8 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall: University Concert Jazz Ensemble with alto saxophonist and guest soloist Mark Gross plus the the Mark Gross Quintet featuring trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, pianist Benito Gonzalez, bassist John Lee, and drummer Corey Rawls. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students.

Oct. 12, 11 a.m. at Princeton University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free Admission.

Nov. 12, 8 p.m. at Princeton University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free Admission.

Nov. 13, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring University Funk/Fusion Ensemble and University Freddie Hubbard Ensemble coached by Kenny Davis. Free admission.

Nov. 14, 1:30 p.m. at McAlpin Rehearsal Hall in Woolworth Center: Jazz Colloquium Performance by pianist Barry Miles and his Trio featuring bassist Andy Lalasis and drummer Bob Shomo. Free admission.

Nov. 22, 8 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium: University Concert Jazz Ensemble with guest vocalist Alison Crockett plus the Alison Crockett Trio featuring bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Jabari Exum performing music from her one woman show Is This It? My American Dream. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students.

Dec. 4, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring University Freddie Hubbard Ensemble. Free admission.

Dec. 7, 5 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall: University Glee Club and the University Concert Jazz Ensemble perform excerpts from Abyssinian 200 – A Celebration by Pulitzer Prize Winning Composer Wynton Marsalis. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students.

Dec. 10, 8 p.m. at Taplin Auditorium in Fine Hall: Recital for Music 215: Projects in Jazz Performance with visiting artist, tenor saxophonist Ralph Bowen. Free admission.

Jan. 14, 8 p.m. at the University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

Feb. 11, 8 p.m. at the University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

Feb. 12, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring the University Jazz Vocal Collective.Free admission.

Feb. 21, 8 p.m. at Taplin Auditorium: Princeton University Jazz Faculty Composing in the Moment Recital with tenor & soprano saxophonist Ralph Bowen, guitarist Bruce Arnold, pianist Michael Cochrane, bassist Brian Glassman, drummer Vince Ector and musical director Dr. Branker. Free admission.

Feb. 22, 11 a.m. at the University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

March 5, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring University Sonny Rollins Ensemble, coached by Ralph Bowen, and the University Free to Be Ensemble, coached by Dr. Branker. Free admission.

March 11, 8 p.m. at the University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

April 9, 11 p.m. at Frist Campus Center: Jazz @ Café Vivian featuring University Standard Deviation Ensemble, coached by Ralph Bowen. Free admission.

April 18, 8 p.m. at the University Chapel: University Chapel Choir, conducted by Penna Rose, and University Concert Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Branker, perform “Music From the Sacred Concerts of Edward Kennedy Ellington.” Free admission.

April 22, 8 p.m. at the University Chapel: University Jazz Vespers Ensemble. Free admission.

April 23, 8 p.m. at Taplin Auditorium: Concert for Music 321: The Improvising Ensemble led by Dr. Branker along with vocalist Anne-Liis Poll from the Estonian Academy of Music & Theatre and trumpeter Artur Majewski in collaboration with Poland’s Adam Mickiewicz Institute. Free admission.

May 9, 8 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium: University Concert Jazz Ensemble and the University Jazz Vocal Collective, conducted by Dr. Branker present It’s an Afro Bop Thing!! Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students.
