Princeton Symphony Orchestra is set to present Classical Series and POPS! concerts during its upcoming season.
The theme of the 2013-14 season is nights and dreams.
This season’s Classical Series features the works of four living, contemporary composers including Derek Bermel, Aaron Jay Kernis, Oscar Navarro and Julian Grant, all of whom are set to be in residence with PSO during the performances of their pieces.
PSO is set to perform Bermel’s Migration Series with the Julliard Jazz Orchestra during their American Voices concert. The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. Oct. 6.
American Voices’ program also includes Aaron Copland’s Suite from Appalachian Spring and George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture.
PSO’s Eternal Light concert features Aaron Jay’s Kernis Colored Field, along with Richard Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration and Salome’s Dance. Cellist Susan Babini is set to join the orchestra.
Eternal Light it scheduled for 4 p.m. Nov. 3.
PSO is set to play Oscar Navarro’s II Concerto for Clarinet and Symphonic Orchestra during La Noche Española. Jose Franch-Ballester is set to join the orchestra on clarinet to play works by Maurice Ravel, Emmanuel Chabrier and Claude Debuss.
La Noche Española is scheduled for 4 p.m. Jan. 19.
The orchestra is set to play Julian Grant’s Dances in the Dark, along with works by Benjamin Britten and Hector Berlioz, during its Nights and Dreams concert.
The performance is set to feature Eric Ruske on French horn and tenor Dominic Armstrong.
Night and Dreams is scheduled for 4 p.m. March 30.
The final Classical Series concert is called Classical Masters. The program features Bach’s Ricercare from The Musical Offering, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major. Pianist Joseph Kalichstein is set to perform.
Classical Masters is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 4.
This season’s Classical concerts feature pre-concert talks scheduled for one hour before the performance.
In addition to the Classical Series, the upcoming season includes the annual POPS! concerts.
Holiday POPS! is set for 4 p.m. Dec. 14.
The 10th anniversary Broadway POPS concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. Feb. 8
PSO concerts take place at Princeton University’s Richardson Auditorium.
PSO’s opening concert weekend, October 5 and 6, has received national recognition for artistic excellence from the National Endowment for the Arts. The American Voices concert follow other Princeton-wide, year-long events to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation by spotlighting the history of Black Americans’ migration south to north in the early 20th century.
