The first Code for Princeton Civic Hackathon is set to take place Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 at the Princeton Public Library. The event will be held in the Sands Library Building at 65 Witherspoon Street in Princeton.
Part of the June 6 National Day of Civic Hacking organized by Code for America, Princeton’s Hackathon is a collaboration between Code for Princeton, the Municipality of Princeton, and the library. The event will bring together local government, technologists, designers, community members and others to find innovative solutions to a variety of problems in the community.
The Code for Princeton Hackathon will begin at noon on June 6 with a coffee hour and team formation. Following a keynote address by Major League Hacking CEO Mike Swift, Mayor Liz Lempert will kick off the hacking session that will continue through midnight.
Saturday will include programming classes for children, My Robotic Friends for grades 1-5 at 1:30 p.m. and Scratch Programming for grades 6 through 8 at 3 p.m. Registration for the classes is not required.
Using publicly-released data, technology and design processes, participants in the Princeton Civic Hackathon will collaborate on projects in areas including: renewable and sustainable energy; politics and elections; volunteerism and civic participation, environmental and geospatial data; and cycling and transportation.
All are welcome to participate in the Hackathon, and expertise in technology is not required. Space is limited, however, and participants must register through codeforprinceton.org.
Hacking will resume at 8 a.m. Sunday with submissions due at 11 a.m. Prizes will be announced at noon.
The Hackathon will also include space for hardware aficionados. See codeforprinceton.org for updates on workshops, speakers and other events as they become available.
All Princeton Public Library programs are free and open to the public. If programs require registration, preference is given to library cardholders. The physically challenged should contact the library at (609) 924-9529 48 hours before any program with questions about special accommodations.
