As the summer comes to an end, some Plainsboro Township offices and departments are shifting one door down to the 18,000 square foot newly renovated Recreation and Cultural Center, the previous location of the Plainsboro Public Library.
The township’s recreation and community services departments have already shifted into new office spaces, while the food pantry and financial aid services are moving into more space in the municipal building.
Plainsboro will officially open its new facility, located next to the municipal building at 641 Plainsboro Road, on Thursday, September 27, at 4 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony and reception is planned for the event. Call 609-799-0909 for more information.
The new recreation center features a large open space that can seat up to 200 people as well as a computer training room with 18 workstations, and classes for the public will be held there. The facility will also feature two new conference rooms that can hold meetings for up to 20 people.
The outdoor plaza connecting the municipal building and the recreation center has been renovated, complete with new tiles, landscaping, and benches. This will allow for some outdoor programs to take place at township headquarters.
Major funding for the project included $1 million grant from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The money came from the Middlesex County open space, recreation and farmland and historic preservation trust fund.
Novo Nordisk, which is making its major footprint in North America at 800 Scudders Mill Road in Plainsboro, donated $75,000 to the project to fund a fitness and activity room in the recreation center. The room will likely be used to hold dances, classes, events, games, and various other activities.
The cost of the recreation and cultural center was approximately $3,223,000; most of which went into addressing basic structural needs of the old library building such as a new roof, heating and air conditioning, and siding.
