Plainsboro Police will participate in this year’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
From Friday, August 17, through Monday, September 3, law enforcement officers will conduct roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints, looking for intoxicated motorists. Many drunk driving incidents take place in Plainsboro, primarily along the stretch of Route 1 that crosses the township.
The nationwide drunk driving crackdown helps raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. The program’s timing coincides with the end of summer vacation and the Labor Day holiday weekend — one of the busiest road travel times of the year.
The campaign is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.
In 2010, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 20 percent of New Jersey’s motor vehicle fatalities. Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety, said the campaign helps educate social drinkers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel. “Many people believe that after a few drinks they’re still safe to drive. Even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time, putting not only yourself but everyone on the road in danger,” Poedubicky said, in a statement distributed by the Plainsboro Police
