Beset by multiple delays, the new Plainsboro Library is creeping toward opening day.
But the highly anticipated temporary certificate of occupancy was finally issued in late January.
“We’re beginning to round out the furnishings in the library and also beginning to look at scheduling the actual move of the books and other material from the old library to the new library,” said Mayor Peter Cantu.
Cantu said officials are anticipating a “soft” opening for the library sometime in April, once the transfer of the books is complete. Talks are ongoing about a grand opening ceremony, possibly in May, for the public and “to recognize people who have been instrumental in making it happen.”
In the meantime, the Township Committee approved contract extensions for the architects working on the new $12.4 million library project, as well as for the library project manager, on February 24.
The contract for BKSK Architects, of Manhattan, as well as Cary Spiegel, who is coordinating the construction project, needed to be renewed because of the delays that have pushed construction back.
This will be the third extension for BKSK, which will be renewed, at an additional cost of $12,500. For Spiegel, the increase will bring the contract to $45,000.
