Major General Harley L. Pickens, 81, of Somerset died October 30. A former longtime resident of West Windsor, he was actively involved in the community and was a member of numerous committees and organizations, including the West Windsor Parking Authority, Shade Tree Committee, and the West Windsor Lions Club.
Born in Baldwin, New York, he graduated with a degree in industrial engineering from Lehigh University, Class of 1950. He was a computer systems manager at RCA and Hertz corporations for 28 years.
Pickens began his military service during the Korean War, and after years of distinguished service in the Army Reserve was promoted to Major General of the 78th Division Army Reserve from which he retired in 1985.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eleanor; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Victor Lopez-Balboa; grandchildren, Andrew, William, Claudia, and Matthew Lopez-Balboa of New York City; son, Donald Pickens of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Robert Cole, and grandchildren, Sarah and Robert III of Readington.
Calling hours will be held at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton, on Wednesday, November 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church on Thursday, November 4, at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004.
