Math Awards

Community Middle School students in grades 6, 7, and 8 placed first in the Continental Math League National Competition. The following students had perfect scores in the Continental Math League Competition: Pythagorean Division: Grade 6, Charles Dai; grade 7, Roger Jin, Viren Sawant, Varun Subbiah, and Margarita Misirpashayeva; and grade 8, Brice Huang, Christopher Shao, Veena Bhagavathi, and Pastorales Liu.

In the New Jersey Math League, Community placed second in grade 6, fourth in grade 7, and fifth in the state in grade 8. High scoring students include Kimberly Ding, grade six, second in the state; Tyler Shen, grade six, fifth; and Brice Huang, grade eight, 11th.

Joanne Crain is the Community Middle School teacher advisor for the Continental Math League and the New Jersey Math League.

Grover Middle School students in grades 6 and 8 placed first in the Continental Math League National Competition. Top scores in the Pythagorean division were received by Grade 6: Matthew Antony, Arjan Balaraman, Byron Chin, Timothy Feng, Joshua Forrest, Franklin Huang, Nishant Iyengar, Stephanie Ji, Eric Liu, Julia Wu, and Sharon Zhang.

Grade 7: Dhruva Byrapatna, Yuqing Chai, Bharath Jaladi, William Jiao, Catherine Lee, David Long, Daniel Selyutin, Vishal Tummalapalli, Anish Visaria, Aneesh Jonelagadda, Charles Xiong, and Angela You.

National Honor

Society Inductees

High School South’s National Honor Society inducted new members on Thursday, May 26. Officers include Sergio Ingato, president; May Chang, chair of tutoring; Jessica Lee, chair of fundraising; Sarah Peck, prom fashion show chair; and Satyajeet Pal, secretary. Jose Rodrigo is the faculty advisor.

Seniors include Ashwin Amurthur, Anne Balicusto, Kory Beach, Juliet Brooks, Lauren Goldfinger, Ankita Gore, Harrison Liew, Connor McElwee, Ante Qu, Sacha Ramjit, Kathryn Rose, Michael Schenk, Divita Singh, Harshita Sinha, Jennifer Yoon, and Jared Ziment.

In College

Cornell Law School: Megan Castellano, a graduate of High School North, Class of 2005, graduated cum laude from Cornell Law School with both a J.D. and an LL.M. in international and comparative law. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science summa cum laude from Boston University. Castellano is joining Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in London, England, in October to practice securities law.

Georgetown University: Peter Lai of Plainsboro graduated. A graduate of High School North, he was also on the spring dean’s list. Eitan Paul and Rachel Carandang, both of West Windsor, are also on the dean’s list.

Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology: Jamie N. Siegel received a degree of doctor of psychology with emphasis on Latino Mental Health. A graduate of High School South, Class of 2003, she double majored in psychology and Spanish at Ohio University, Class of 2007. She has traveled extensively in Spain, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, and provides treatment to her non-English speaking patients in Spanish. She is beginning post-doctoral fellowships in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Methodist University: Marissa Kuzbyt of Plainsboro received the William P. Lowdermilk Student Achievement Award, an honor of leadership ability, commitment to vocational calling, and campus involvement. A graduate of High School North, Class of 2008, she recently completed her junior year.

Muhlenberg College: Katherine Epstein of West Windsor graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in dance.

New England College: Laura Medina of West Windsor received master of science in accounting.

Northeastern University: Students on the dean’s list include Plainsboro residents Dewang Chauhan, majoring in physical therapy, and Lauren Grenzig, majoring in health science; and West Windsor residents Kay Beach, a student majoring in international affairs, and William Wagner, majoring in history.

University of New England: Katie Elizabeth Rhein of Plainsboro graduated with a master’s degree in social work. She will continue working in Maine with teens addicted to drugs and alcohol at Day-One, a non-profit organization where she interned for two years. Rhein is a graduate of St. Paul’s School, Notre Dame High School, and a magna cum laude graduate of St. Joseph`s College in Standish, Maine.

Library Scholarship

Nomin Ujiyedinn, a senior at High School North, received the Friends of the West Windsor Library’s Jan Trenholm Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 at the Friends’ 30th annual meeting held on May 9. Ujiyedinn participates in the library’s teen volunteer Program. Her supervisor, Margit Chelluri, described the scholarship winner as “conscientious, enthusiastic, and diligent” — all attributes that are important in maintaining an orderly library. Ujiyedinn volunteered more than 100 hours during her senior year.

The annual scholarship was established by the Friends using donations received in memory of Jan Trenholm, who was a member of the Friends of the Library for many years. The scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who is a member of the Mercer County Library System, volunteers more than 25 hours during the school year to West Windsor Library, plans post high school education, and files a completed application.

This is the 30th anniversary year for the Friends of the West Windsor Library, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit, volunteer organization.

Photo Essay

Contest Winner

Max Azaro, 12, of West Windsor was the grand prize winner of the ABT Pointe and Shoot Photo Essay Contest. He won a two night stay in the Mandarin Oriental New York, tickets to see ABT’s “Cinderella,” and a backstage tour. His mother, Kathy, took the photos at the Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton. Max’s winning essay is hanging in the studio.

On His Toes

Drew Nelson, a former Plainsboro resident, will be heading to the Royal Ballet School in September. He received a full scholarship plus living expenses to attend the school.

Benefit for Japan

Bhargavi Ganesh, a junior at High School South, raised money for the Japan Tsunami victims through an Indian music concert. The April 10 performance was held at the Chinmaya Mission Tristate Center in Cranbury. Ganesh raised $2,500, which was contributed to the Japan Society, New York. The Hope For Japan fundraiser featured performers Ganesh on vocals, Vijaya Voleti on violin, and Keerthi Venkatramani on the mridangam.

Scholarship Awarded

Katherine Amigo, a senior at High School North, earned a $2,000 scholarship awarded by the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association. The recognition program was held on May 26, at the NJPSA/FEA headquarters in Monroe Township.

All secondary school principals in New Jersey were invited to submit the name of a high school senior who demonstrated leadership by participation in co-curricular activities other than athletics. Applicants are required to submit a one-page essay about the importance of student involvement in school activities, as well as a resume and letters of recommendation.

Sudoku Champ

Aastha Chokshi, 15, took first place in Plainsboro Library’s Sudoku competition in April. She is a sophomore at High School North. She finished a complex Sudoku puzzle in just 18 minutes — with a perfect score.

Art Awards

David Van Dyke of West Windsor received third place in the student division in Lawrence Library’s annual Trash Art contest. The winners were announced at an artist’s reception held on April 30.

Volunteers

Carrie Wainwright, executive director of Storytelling Arts Inc., a nonprofit based in West Windsor, coordinated “A Taste of the Arts,” a benefit evening for CityArts, a coalition of 25 nonprofits promoting arts programming for kids in Trenton. Honoree at the event was Alphonso Jones II of Trenton, who received a best actor award for his role in “The Lion King” on Broadway.

High School juniors who volunteered at event held on May 13 in Plainsboro include Malin Ludwig, Erin Bonafede, Julia Wainwright (volunteer coordinator), and Maddy Craig. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West Windsor based Storytelling Arts, Inc. and CityArts, a coalition of nonprofits aimed at increasing arts opportunities for children and youth in the greater Trenton area.
