The twelfth annual Festival of the Arts will be held in the Plainsboro Municipal complex on Saturday, September 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event is packed with four hours of music, dance, art, demonstrations, and hands-on participation. A rich array of music from around the world will be performed in three different venues throughout the afternoon..##M:[more]##
Small children will be painting giant boxes, building lego skyscrapers, and listening to African folk tales, while adults may be more involved in demonstrations of calligraphy, Chinese paper cutting and knotting, painting, orchid growing, stained glasswork, basket weaving, and tai chi. There will also be African and Latin dance mini-workshops.
Three communal art projects will take place during the festival, including a workshop creating artist trading cards spearheaded by Jennifer Mehlman followed by a trading session at 3:30 p.m.; a reprise of the summer basket weaving projects using colorful variations of the coiling technique lead by Carol Quick, and a nouveau-style signature quilt sponsored by the Plainsboro Historical Society to continue a tradition displayed in the Plainsboro Museum.
Plainsboro resident Gerry Hemingway presents jazz with Bassdrumbone Band at 2 p.m. on the plaza. Hemingway performs on drums, while Mark Helias is on double bass and bass guitar, and Ray Anderson on trombone.
The municipal court room events include a sari parade featuring live music by the Hamid Group. A concert by the Jubilante trio with Uneeda Brewer-Frazier on piano, Elizabeth Simmons on flute, and Leslie Young on bassoon, will be presented in the library’s community room.
The bargain basement book sale will be open for business all afternoon and three dollars gets a bag full books. A variety of sizes and colors of chrysanthemums and tee-shirts, featuring the library’s “Change for Change” motif, will also be for sale.
Attendees are encouraged to bring change to donate to the “Change for Change” campaign for the new library. “Already past the $6,”500 mark, the project truly demonstrates that the pennies and quarters add up,” says library director Jinny Baeckler. “It also demonstrates to small children that a penny does mean a lot, when invested in a great cause.”
